The early identification of disabilities especially in minors is of pivotal importance. It is the means by which early treatment can be administered to possibly minimize the impact of the disability or even completely reverse the disability. Early detection plays a huge part in assisting persons living with disabilities achieve their full potential. A collaborative strategy for early identification of disabilities involving all key stakeholders (service providers, focal persons, family members etc.) to persons with disabilities to develop a referral system is imperative.
In our quest to improve networking among Service Providers, the Zambia Enhanced CBR Program (ZECREP) held a one-day round-table discussion at Cresta Golfview Hotel. The discussion brought together Medical Doctors, Church Leaders and Traditional Healers to explore ways for developing a referral system for early identification of children with Disabilities.
A lot was discussed but notable among the recommendations was the need for legislative changes for the recognition of the work of traditional healers and the need for building trust among the providers. The participants were reminded of the importance of ensuring they focussed on the NEEDS Only of a child with Disabilities. Participants were drawn from Lusaka, Kafue and Monze, districts where the ZECREP Project is being implemented.
Early identification of disability enables early intervention measures that can maximize the child's outcome, curb the onset of complications, and support parents. We as Twatasha through ZECREP are advocating for the early detection of disability in children to help give children a better future.
